Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.– Psalms 23:4
The Love and Fatherhood of God is revealed in His discipline of His Children. The Psalmist refers to this as ‘thy rod and thy staff…’ In shepherding, the rod is employed for correction, and the staff for direction; and it is the combination of these two that brings true comfort. God uses both tools to provide order and guidance while leading His Children.
The admonition by the Author of Hebrews puts it this way, “For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives. But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons” – Hebrews 12:6, 8. This Scripture clearly reveals the fact that a true mark of our Father-son relationship with God is our ability to accept His discipline, lest, we become bastards. The staff without the rod will breed a rebellious child, and the rod without the staff will produce a wandering and straying child. May we not be without these two in Jesus Name.
PRAYER: O LORD, thank You for the expression of Your Love for me through the instrumentality of Your discipline. I ask that both Your Rod and Your Staff will be employed in my relationship with You, and may I be opened to Your discipline always. I ask that You’ll restore order and discipline to Your Church in Jesus Name!
